European frameless cabinets (also called "full-access" or "full-overlay" cabinets) are built without the front face frame found on traditional American cabinetry. Instead of a wooden frame across the front of the cabinet box, frameless cabinets use a thicker, stronger box with doors and drawers that mount directly to the sides.
This construction method has been the standard in European kitchens for over 50 years. It's now the fastest-growing cabinet style in the United States — and for good reason.
Frameless vs. Framed: What's the Difference?
| Feature | European Frameless | Traditional Framed |
|---|---|---|
| Front Frame | None — full access to interior | 1.5" face frame narrows opening |
| Usable Interior Space | ~15% more storage | Reduced by frame obstruction |
| Door Appearance | Full-overlay, seamless look | Visible frame between doors |
| Box Material | Thicker panels (¾") for rigidity | Thinner sides (½"), frame adds strength |
| Hinge System | Concealed European hinges (adjustable) | Exposed or concealed (less adjustable) |
| Design Style | Modern, contemporary, transitional | Traditional, colonial, craftsman |
| Drawer Access | Wider drawers, easier access | Drawers narrowed by frame rails |
6 Benefits of European Frameless Construction
1. More Storage Space
Without a face frame blocking the opening, frameless cabinets give you approximately 15% more usable interior space. Pull-out shelves, lazy Susans, and organizer inserts fit more easily — and more completely — inside the box. You access the full width of the cabinet, not just the space between frame stiles.
2. Sleek, Modern Aesthetic
Full-overlay doors create clean, uninterrupted lines across your kitchen. There's no visible frame between doors — just a minimal reveal that gives European kitchens their signature seamless appearance. This look works beautifully with modern, contemporary, and transitional kitchen designs.
3. Stronger Box Construction
Frameless cabinets use ¾" thick plywood panels on all sides (top, bottom, and sides) to provide structural rigidity without relying on a face frame. At Marfa NuEra, we use furniture-grade plywood — never particle board or MDF — for the cabinet box. The result is a cabinet that's built to last a lifetime.
4. Adjustable Concealed Hinges
European-style concealed hinges are fully adjustable in three directions — up/down, left/right, and in/out. This means your doors always align perfectly, even after years of use. And because the hinges are hidden, nothing interrupts the clean lines of your cabinet fronts.
5. Easier to Clean and Maintain
No face frame means no dust-catching crevices between doors and frame. The flat, full-overlay surfaces wipe clean easily. Fewer joints also means fewer places for grease and grime to accumulate over years of kitchen use.
6. Better Value Per Square Inch
Because you get more usable storage per cabinet, you often need fewer total cabinets to achieve the same storage capacity as a framed kitchen. That can mean lower total project cost — especially when combined with our factory-direct pricing.

Made in the USA — Delivered in 14–21 Days
Most European-style frameless cabinets sold in the US are actually manufactured overseas and shipped by container — a process that takes 12–16 weeks or more. At Marfa NuEra, we bring European construction quality to American manufacturing speed.
Every cabinet is built to order at our Elk Grove Village factory. Because we control the entire process — from CNC cutting to edgebanding to finishing to assembly — there are no supply chain delays. Your full custom kitchen is designed, manufactured, and delivered in 14–21 days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are frameless cabinets as strong as framed cabinets?
Yes — often stronger. Frameless cabinets use thicker box panels (¾" vs ½") to compensate for the absence of a face frame. The result is a rigid, durable box that stands up to decades of daily use. Our plywood construction adds additional strength that particle board alternatives can't match.
Can European frameless cabinets work with a traditional kitchen design?
Absolutely. While frameless construction is most associated with modern design, it works beautifully with transitional and even traditional aesthetics when paired with the right door style and finish. A Shaker-profile door in a warm wood grain, for example, creates a classic look with frameless convenience.
What's the difference between your cabinets and imported European cabinets?
Same construction method, but made in the USA. This means 14–21 day delivery instead of 12–16 weeks, factory-direct pricing without import duties and dealer markups, and direct access to our design and manufacturing team for customization.
Do you use plywood or particle board?
All Marfa cabinet boxes are built with furniture-grade plywood. We never use particle board or MDF for structural components. Plywood is stronger, more moisture-resistant, and holds fasteners better over time.
